Recovery From an Achilles Tear

Here’s what to expect when you have an Achilles tendon rupture.

The Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in the body, connecting the heel bone to the calf muscle. This tendon is responsible for all foot movements, whether running or jumping. Unfortunately, this tendon is also susceptible to injury, particularly in athletes. If our Austin, TX, podiatrists Dr. Trinity Mereau and Dr. Steven Walters have diagnosed you with an Achilles tendon tear (aka an Achilles tendon rupture), here's what you should know about the recovery process.

How long is my recovery process?

We know the first question on every patient’s mind is “How long will it take for my injury to heal?” All good things take time and it certainly will take time for an Achilles tendon rupture to fully heal. Our Austin, TX, podiatrist typically sees a recovery time of about 6-8 weeks with most Achilles tendon tears. During this time, it’s important to stay off the affected leg. Athletes will need to take several months away from their activities (usually anywhere from 4 months to one year) to allow the tendon ample time to heal.

How is an Achilles tendon rupture treated?

When you come into our practice for care, we will discuss your treatment options with you in more detail, but simply put, there are two main options. One option is to allow the tendon to heal naturally. During this time you will wear a brace (usually for about 8 weeks) to protect the foot and to prevent you from putting weight on it. If the tendon doesn’t heal properly on its own, then we may recommend surgery.

Sometimes surgery is the best course of action over more conservative options. When is surgery often recommended? Some research suggests that surgery may reduce the risk for another rupture later on, so surgery may be advised in younger individuals, athletes and those who play sports. Your activity level, lifestyle and personal preference will play a role in which treatment option is ideal for you, but it’s important that you seek immediate medical attention if you suspect that you might have an Achilles tendon tear.

What are the warning signs of a ruptured Achilles tendon?

It’s important to recognize the signs and symptoms of an Achilles tendon tear, so you can turn to our Austin, TX, foot doctors right away for care. Some warning signs include,

  • The inability to stand on your tiptoes or bend the foot
  • A sharp, sudden and severe pain around the heel
  • Swelling and stiffness around the heel and ankle
  • A popping or snapping sound at the moment of impact or injury
