Getting Help for Your Bunions

Bunions can cause you pain, difficulty wearing shoes, and if severe, trouble walking. The type of treatment you receive will depend on the severity of your bunions. Dr. Trinity Mereau and Dr. Steven Walters are podiatrists at Capital Foot & Ankle in Austin, TX. They can help you with your bunions.

Treatment Options for Bunions

Austin patients whose bunions are not too severe may find relief from the following non-surgical treatments:

  • Finding more comfortable shoes: Wearing shoes that have a roomy toe box can give your toes plenty of space and alleviate pressure on your bunions.
  • Using pads or cushions: Over-the-counter bunion pads can ease the pain.
  • Anti-inflammatory medications: Oral or injectable anti-inflammatories can help with pain and swelling.
  • Orthotics: Over-the-counter or customized corrective shoe inserts can help to distribute the pressure on your feet more evenly when you are walking.

Surgical Options for Bunions

If the above conservative treatments do not help you find relief, you may need surgical correction for your bunions. There are several surgical procedures that may be performed individually or in combination at our office in Austin, TX. These include:

  • Removing the bulging tissue from your toe joint
  • Removing part of the joint and realigning the toe
  • Repositioning the bone in the forefoot to correct the big toe joint
  • Fusing the bones in the big toe joint

You should be able to walk after your bunion surgery, though full recovery can take up to eight weeks. You should wear well-fitting shoes after the procedure to ensure that your bunions do not recur.
