What To Do About Ankle Pain

Whether it's from a recent injury, or it's a nagging discomfort that seems to have emerged out of nowhere, ankle pain can make everyday tasks extra difficult. You can often treat this condition at home with some basic first aid, but if you are not noticing improvement, or the discomfort too much to bear, then it may be time to contact your podiatrist. If you would like to learn more about ankle pain and similar conditions, then please reach out to your local Austin, TX, experts, Dr. Trinity Mereau and Dr. Steven Walters, of Capital Foot & Ankle.

At-Home Care

A common cause for ankle pain is spraining, which occurs when the ligaments that connect your leg and foot are overstressed. An awkward and sudden movement can stretch them beyond their natural range and cause them to become inflamed.

Rest is recommended immediately after the injury or at the first signs of discomfort. Keeping the ankle elevated above your heart can help minimize swelling.

Applying ice and compression can help with the pain and also inflammation. Ice should be applied for about 20 minutes throughout the day, with care not to have the ice contact directly with the skin. A common method is to put ice in a plastic bag and then wrap that in a towel.

Over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can be of further help as you heal.
