Treating Your Bunions

Hallux valgus--more commonly known as a bunion--is a progressive deformity of the big toe joint. This bony bump causes irritation and pain and moves the big toe toward the second and third toes. At Capital Foot & Ankle in Austin and The Hills, TX, Dr. Mereau, Dr. Walters, and Dr. John understand bunions, and they can help you limit yours.

How do bunions happen?

Usually, a bunion happens over time as the pressures of overuse, tight, narrow shoes, and inherited foot structure change the shape and function of the metatarsophalangeal joint. Gender (female) and age (over 60) seem to play roles as well as arthritis, flat feet, and other structural and gait problems, says Harvard Health.

Diagnosing bunions

As pain, redness, and deformity begin, you should book a consultation with one of our podiatrists at Capital Foot & Ankle in Austin, TX. Your foot doctor will examine your feet and take digital X-rays. He may ask about your typical shoe choice as well and recommend footwear that is roomier and more supportive.

Treating bunions

While Dr. Mereau, Dr. Walters, and Dr. John are skilled in all kinds of podiatric surgeries, a bunionectomy is not the treatment of choice--at least initially--for most of these acquired deformities. Your podiatrist will want to relieve as much pressure as possible from the affected joint through rest and adding Moleskin padding or a customized orthotic to your shoe.

Also, he may recommend ice or warm soaks, ibuprofen for pain, and massage. Cortisone injections can relieve inflammation in some cases.

Keeping bunions at bay

Here are some helpful tips:

  1. Wear low-heeled, properly fitting shoes.
  2. Find time to rest and elevate your feet during your busy day.
  3. Maintain proper body weight.
  4. Go barefoot when at home to strengthen the muscles in your feet.
